Avoiding leg cramps?

I was wondering what are the best stretches or things to eat/drink after having a charlie horse (aka a severe cramp in your calf)?

I had one two days ago in the morning, and since every morning it threatens to tighten up again.

Currently I: eat a banana every morning. drink tonic water at night (per my dr's suggestion to help with leg cramps).

    suggestions? :)

Muscle cramps are usually caused by a mineral (or electrolyte) imbalance in your muscles, so the best place to start is with a good multi-mineral supplement. Make sure you take that in the morning, and at night before bed. Make sure it has calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Drink plenty of water throughout your day. If you are exercising strenuously, try a sports beverage to supplement what you are losing through sweating. The liquid will also help to flush lactic acid and other waste products from your muscles.

If your leg cramps are a night time problem, try having a glass of milk and a calcium tablet before bedtime. If that doesn't do it, try a glass of orange juice and a potassium tablet before bedtime. If neither of those work, try a magnesium tablet instead of calcium with your milk.

I always eat bananas before I go play basketball and hydrate myself as much as possible. I can say for sure bananas help because the days I dont eat them before I play....guess what? Cramps!

Friends, 2 mogjts ago, I did what I thought was impossible in a dead sleep....
I did the twist and shout... my body flew in the air and landed on my stomach, then up in the air and landed on my back while I am trying to find my way to the edge of the bed to get on the floor.... I am not wanting the floor! So I am yelling at my husband to wake up &help me ... my lower calf is on fire and knotted up in a cramp from h. e.- double sticks!

It is still stiff and sore. What happened, caused this? What can I do to prevent it and the safest non med to take to prevent this.

I am currently on a dr & coach directed diet/fitness plan-1000mg 144 oz water intake allowance a day. Help!
