I just got back from the dentist and had a deep clean on both sides of my mouth. They injected me with that numbing serum. It was supposed to go away in an hour but it's been 4 hours and my whole mouth is still swollen and numb. Are there things I can do to make it go away faster? I'd love to be able to talk normally and eat soon! not to mention just looking normal again!

Challenging question! I've had a look around and this question appears a lot in question & answer sites, but have not found this addressed by any authoritative sources. Most people who answered said that there's not much you can do to hasten the numbing to go away. However on http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060626092156AA37P0B, one person suggested this:
You might try a hot pack to stimulate blood flow and that might help to dissipate the Novocaine sooner. Working your jaws might help to, but you would have to be extremely careful not to bite yourself. If all else fails, take a nap. Time will pass more quickly and when you awaken, the Novocaine most likely will have worn off.
<Apparently this worked for the person who asked this question per the response below>
The heat pack idea actually helped a lot. Since you were the first to give it, I'm giving you the ten pts. Thanks to everyone for answering though.1 -

metabolism! call up someone and talk. Working your jaw and moving your mouth will help wear it out.

That happens to me too! The numbness always lasts for 4+ hours. What I would do is just eat. Somehow that seems to help. But chew carefully, of course!
